Here at the Leicester Curry Awards 2019 we are incredibly passionate about supporting our local charities, so that said, we are delighted to share that our second charity partner at the 3rd annual event is Emmaus Leicestershire & Rutland.
The global charity, which aims to combat homelessness, was founded in Paris in 1949 by MP, Catholic priest and former member of the French Resistance, Abbé Pierre. The movement quickly grew and went from a national charity to an international one.
Established in 1971, Emmaus International is now made up of more than 350 groups, in 37 countries, across four regions: Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.
The first UK Emmaus community appeared in Cambridge in the early 90’s by Selwyn Image. Today there are now 29 communities across the UK which supports more than 750 formerly homeless people, by providing them with a home for as long as they need it and meaningful work in a community setting. The UK is now the largest Emmaus movement outside of France.
Emmaus Leicestershire & Rutland’s CEO Mir Juma said: “We are thrilled that we’ve been chosen as by the Leicester Curry Awards. As a local charity, it means a lot to be associated with such a prestigious event. This support will help to spread the word about our work and the funds will go directly to help formerly homeless people rebuild their lives.
“Homelessness is a problem which is sadly growing and we’re doing our best to help in the Leicestershire & Rutland area. We could not continue this vital work without the support of our local community.”
